(Travel) – Imagine spending days, nights, and weeks navigating the seas. That is what Captain Jose Maria Marco has been doing for decades; that, and traveling all over the world. The youthful 60’s something man born and raised in Sevilla these days spends a large portion of his time scuba diving. I met him in Playa del Carmen, located in front of the Cozumel island.
The coral reefs around Cozumel (Mexico) are a prime destination for scuba diving, about 20 kilometers or 12 miles off the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. The reefs are part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, the second largest coral reef system in the world.
“Scuba diving gives you access to unbelievable ocean beauty; the experience is unforgettable and you want to keep coming back to the reefs, actually I should say you want to go down the ocean, over and over again,” says Captain Marco, who also is a certified, scuba diving trainer.
“Safety is key when scuba diving. Make sure to get effective training. Make sure to always be accompanied when underwater, keeping an eye on each other,” he says, emphasizing that one should never scuba dive alone.
But most importantly, scuba diving is about discovering the beauty and biodiversity nurtured by and around the reefs. “I have taken thousands of pictures over the years, and I don’t cease to be amazed by the beauty underwater.”
And so these are just a few, taken at Cozumel’s coral reefs by Captain Marco. Enjoy!
