Past Lives: An Ode to a Childhood Crush

Past Lives, a film by debutant director Celine Song, is receiving favorable reviews. The film is enchanting at many levels: the story, the acting, and the dialogues. It is also a glimpse into South Korean culture versus America, the continent (USA and Canada).

Released in January 2023, Past Lives is a romantic drama film by Celine Song, both fictional and based on her own experiences. The story is about Nora and Hae Sung, two childhood friends who ended up separated by country and ambitions, and who finally meet in person many years later.

The way Hae Sung looks at Nora is nothing but heartwarming. One wants to hug Hae Sung (played by Teo Yoo) and go find him in South Korea to ask if he is available. The male character is what most women would like in a romantic male.

Leading actress Greta Lee is amazing in her portrayal of Nora, a young Korean who immigrated first to Canada and then to the United States. John Magaro does a very nice job playing the insecure husband.

Although the story may be considered sad, it leaves you inspired or at least moved. One of the strengths of this movie is that you never know if they will end up together or apart.

Watch it online on @Youtube @AppleTV+ and other streaming platforms, and also in movie theaters in November.
