By Lupita Peimbert. I am so excited to share news about the First Annual Latina/Latino Literature Read-In across Oakland schools, one of the most multicultural school districts in the nation. The goal is to get 200 volunteers to read to children and adolescents from diverse backgrounds, in English, Spanish, or bilingually (best option) and by doing so, promote the beauty and values of the Latino culture thus promoting harmony and understanding among families who come from many countries and cultures and who now call Oakland, home.
The First Annual Latina/Latino Literature Read-In starts Monday, October 5, and it ends on Friday, October 9. It is organized by the Oakland Public Education Fund in partnership with other organizations.
The goal is to reach 200 volunteers. My two cents: great if readers/storytellers are Latino/Latina but any Latino-friendly will do it. The idea is to show the beauty of our Latino Community, specially now that we are celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month.
Please do not hesitate to contact Lilly (lilly@oaklandedfund.org) if you would like to read to students. I am excited that I will be reading bilingually at ICS, International Community School in the Fruitvale District on Monday, and at Fred Korematsu Academy in East Oakland on Friday.
